A Note from our Learning Commons

Dear families,

It has been wonderful being able to see students back at school and to see them in person despite the unusual start to the school year. This letter is to inform you of some information from the Library Learning Commons regarding students borrowing books and how to access our free digital eBooks Audiobooks on our Virtual Learning Commons (the VLC).

Book Exchange and Return: Students will soon be able to begin borrowing books with safety measures in place. All library materials will be placed in quarantine when they are returned.

Digital Ebooks and Audiobooks: The Waterloo Catholic District School Board subscribes to a digital library called Sora where they can access many eBooks and Audiobooks in the following ways: 1. In an Internet browser (Chrome recommended): visit soraapp.com.

2. WCDSB Virtual Learning Commons (VLC): https://vlcguides.wcdsb.ca/home

3. Brightspace by D2L: Log in to Brightspace via WCDSB My Apps (https://myapplications.microsoft.com/). Sora is in the Green Tools menu.

4. on a WiFi-connected device: Install the Sora app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or go to soraapp.com on the device’s browser.

5. St. Gregory School website under the Learning Commons Tab: https://stgregory.wcdsb.ca/learning-commons/

Open Sora and find your school (Waterloo Catholic District School Board) and sign in with the same login that you use to login at school. You will need to know your student ID #.

Browse the tab to borrow a book. Your book will open and you can start reading right away. Go to your  to see all of your books where you can also open your book!

Changing Your Child’s Current Learning Platform

Dear St. Gregory, the Great families,

Early in September, we announced that the first transition point for families to switch their children from St. Gregory the Great (face to face) to St. Isidore (virtual learning), or vice versa, would be the Thanksgiving weekend.

To assist in planning to accommodate the needs of our families, interested families will find a “transition form” on the Waterloo Catholic District School Board webpage this Thursday September 24th at 9 a.m. to Monday September 28th at 6 p.m. Please note that requests must be made during this time only. The form will be available on the main webpage for WCDSB at www.wcdsb.ca in the Spotlight Section.

It’s Time to Play Again!

The WCDSB enters Phase 2 of RECESS PROTOCOLS starting Monday September 21st.

Students are invited to bring personal equipment to school to play with at recess.

The following will be permitted at this time…

  • Scooters and Bikes – Father Malcolm has offered the Church parking lot during lunch recess for students wishing to ride their scooters and bikes. A portion of the parking lot will be designated and supervised by school staff.
  • Soccer balls – Passing drills only – no games. Students will be distanced with classroom cohort only.
  • Basketballs – Shooting practice – no games. Students will be limited per number of outdoor hoops.
  • Skipping Rope – Individual play
  • Balls and Hula Hoops for individual play.

Students will…

  • Be supervised as they maintain physical distance
  • Be divided as per our yard boundaries
  • Sanitize appropriately before and after recess
  • Follow the staggered lunch schedule (2 lunch periods to support distancing)

Great Job, Parents of our Grade 1’s and 2’s!!

It’s been a capital G, Great start!

The families of our Grade 1’s and 2’s did a wonderful job with respecting our new protocols for student drop off. We know it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to your little one today, but student safety continues to be a priority and we are proud of YOU also.

Our Grade 1’s and 2’s have settled nicely into their new classrooms and are getting used to the new signage throughout our school.

We are teaching/learning some new routines which include:

• Keeping a safe distance from the friend in front of us in line;

• Sanitizing our hands on the way in and out of the school; and

• What to do with our mask at recess (place it on our desks)

Truly, the school is full of life today! We can’t wait to welcome our Grade 3’s and 4’s back tomorrow, our 5’s and 6’s on Thursday and our leaders of the school, our Grade 7’s and 8’s on Friday.

We got this HAWKS!

It’s Back-to-School Time! You Have Questions — We Have Answers!!

Hello St. Gregory Families,

It’s back-to-school time, and we know that along with the usual excitement, this September brings with it some apprehension and more than a few questions from parents.

Last week we asked the WCDSB community to send us those questions.

Please click the link below and follow along as Director of Education Loretta Notten personally answers the most common questions we received.
